Personal Stories
February 4th through February 27th, 2010

Sara Zin was born in Korea but was raised in Seattle where she currently resides. Sara's self portrait paintings are personal expressions of cross cultural conflict. These paintings represent the inner struggle she faces daily - the conflict generated by the understanding that her Americanization has omitted a great part of her cultural background. With the objective of "fitting in" her familial cultural history has been rendered secondary to the greater American experience. Seeking an identity that is true to her phenotypic expression as well as her cultural and social history is the essential core of these poignant paintings. Sara is a graduate of the University of Washington's, Master in Fine Arts School.

Dianne Ding grew up in China and moved to America in 1993. Her oil on paper paintings also stem from the dichotomy of her cultural experiences. The enculturation process of moving to a society predicated on abundance versus a predominantly agrarian and collective society was significant. Dianne's paintings represent the cultural diversity of Eastern and Western society's - each painting contains two characters - a Caucasian figure as well as an Asian figure. The Western character may be dressed in 18th , 19th, or 20th century clothing - rich colorful fabrics sweep across the canvas in a dramatic fashion. Equally prominent are the robes and dress that cover the Asian figure - a spectacle of color and flowing fabric are presented. The paintings clarify the need, irrespective of political, social, cultural, or financial differences to cloak ourselves in beautiful garb. The search for common elements that bridge cultural differences are the core of Dianne's paintings.
