Pacini Lubel Gallery is proud to exhibit the paintings of Northwest artist Natalie Oswald. Natalie's paintings combine and contextualize both organic and inorganic elements. Nature is brought into the home - a chestnut and simple branch might be painted with a complex decorative background. A peacock might strut across the canvas as the backdrop decoration highlights the beauty and integrity of the bird. Fish, birds, and insects navigate the surface of the paintings while repetitive decorative elements provide a subtle backdrop of color and form.
The interplay and tension between real and unreal, nature's beauty and created decoration and what we choose to surround ourselves with are all at play in Natalie's beautifully rendered paintings.
Natalie writes that "my recent work is part of an ongoing exploration of nature and the decorative arts. Birds, beasts, and flora are juxtaposed with the somewhat rigid, formal aspects of traditional decoration and ornament. Backgrounds created from repetitive patterns and faux finishes reveal the artifice of manmade objects in contrast to the singularity of elements from natural world.
These works are inspired by a childhood in the rural Northwest and a fascination with textiles, porcelain, tapestry and woodworking. I wish to capture the collision of so much decoration; the moment where a bird scurries across a floral quilt or a bouquet is tossed onto a patterned tablecloth. Like a collection of curiosities, nature's vanity often trumps the manufactured world of its surroundings".
