Alicia Tormey - Second Nature
November 5 - November 28, 2009
Pacini Lubel Gallery will present the paintings by Mixed Media artist Alicia Tormey from November 5th through November 28th in the East gallery. Alicia's paintings are nature inspired - waterways, fertile fields, sky stretching fronds and luminescent light are combined to create contemporary landscapes. The paintings incorporate bee's wax which is combined with pigments to form "fantastical patterns" and dimension to the paintings. Alicia's paintings incorporate both abstraction and landscape - the resulting work is a series of paintings that are clearly unique in approach and style.
Alicia Tormey states that "the inspiration for my botanical pieces came to me when a meadow near my family home in Idaho was cleared for development. I chose to preserve my memories of this area in a series of paintings that capture the more intimate nuances of being in nature and to foster a deeper respect for the environment. Like most of us, I am trying to better understand what it is to be human, and for me, creating art is the natural path on this journey of discovery.
The encaustic paintings utilize a process that combines resin, colored pigments and bees wax. The wax must be heated to a molten state before it can be combined with the other elements. This process was developed in the 4th century, BC.
Gallery artists Michael Lucero, Wanxin Zhang, Deanna Clayton, Steve Klein and Lanny Bergner will all present new work in the West Gallery. Ceramists Michael Lucero premieres his new series of totemic teapots and Wanxin Zhang presents his cross cultural figurative sculptures. Glass artists Deanna Clayton (pate-de-verre vessels) and Steve Klein (fused, slumped and blown) present their sculpture. Two new hanging mixed media wire and glass mesh pieces by Lanny Bergner complete the exhibition.
