Margaret Keelan and James Tisdale - New Works
October 1 - October 31, 2009
Pacini Lubel Gallery is proud to present the work of artists Margaret Keelan and James Tisdale from October 1st through October 31st in the East Gallery. Both artists are figurative ceramists that upend our sense of reality. Margaret Keelan creates sculpture that look like old wood figures - old Santos imagery or folk art carvings come to mind. Joanne Dickson writes "the work is rich with paradox. There is at once a feeling that these were treasured possessions, perhaps even ritual objects, at the same time they appear to have been created carelessly and discarded. The figures endure despite their apparent fragility".
James Tisdale invokes humor in his colorful and beautifully textured sculpture. Whimsical characters bend and swoop in a dance of motion. Animals interact directly with their masters in other sculptures. James writes that "the work is an outward manifestation of my views towards the world around me. The work is just a channel to better understand the world and my place within it. The historical art influences on my work range from the figurative work of the Renaissance, the kitsch work of the 30's and 40's, to the innocent god-felt work of folk art".
The West Gallery will exhibit glass sculpture by Keith Clayton, Deanna Clayton and Charissa Brock. All three artists create art using Pate de verre. Pate de verre dates back to the ancient Egyptians - ground glass is packed in molds and then fired. The Clayton's create colorful functional object forms - vases, vessels and bowls while Charrissa Brock incorporates her glass elements with bamboo creating mixed media sculpture.
Please join us for our opening, Thursday, October 1st from 6 pm to 8 pm.
