Joey Chiarello - Evolution
September 3 - September 26, 2009

Pacini Lubel Gallery is proud to exhibit the sculpture of Seattle based ceramic artist Joey Chiarello from September 3rd through September 26th in the East Gallery. In this exhibition, Joey's second solo show, he continues his exploration of animal based sculpture as a metaphor for human emotion. Protective armor envelop a number of the sculptures - are these creatures in an active phase of war or are they simply traversing the landscape of life? Some animals seem eager to engage while others ponder. Some pieces seem to be protective in nature while others attempt to disengage.

Joey's world of fantasy may involve animals of power - a wolf cloaked in armor, an upright crocodile viewing the observer eye to eye, and a lion proud in its glory. These animals seem willing and eager to tackle issues head on - no backing down. In contrast Joey presents a goat - apparently sage and thoughtful in its approach. The Goat wears a cape and exudes "Yoda" like wisdom. A Zebra and Tiger appear to stand guard - protecting their environment as they cling to weaponry. An ox and tortoise represent the average person making their way through life - they are not seeking power, not attempting to lead through higher intellect or protect through societal given position - they are simply trying to live a simple and peaceful life. The ox and tortoise represent an idealized innocence.

Joey Chiarello's sculpture takes on the energy and paradigm of current societal issues. The intellectual integrity of the work is balanced by the colorful and texture filled surfaces of the sculpture. Although a clear commentary of our cultural surroundings is evident Joey attempts to ease our concerns by invoking some levity in each piece.

New work by nationally recognize northwest artist Charissa Brock will be exhibited in the West Gallery. Charissa's unique blending of bamboo and Pate de Verre glass sculpture will be exhibited with other gallery artists including Jim Kraft, Alicia Tormey and Meg Holgate.

Please join us for our opening, September 3rd from 6 pm to 8 pm.
