Glimpses - Modern Ceramics
February 5 - February 28, 2009
Pacini Lubel Gallery will exhibit a national survey of contemporary ceramics from February 5 to February 28. This exhibition, titled Glimpses - Modern Ceramics, presents a diverse group of artists that approach their creative expression in a multidimensional manner. The participating ceramists create figurative, representational and abstracted forms and all have very unique surface treatment techniques.
Artists in this exhibition will include Michael Lucero, the northwest schooled master of ceramics who creates multi colored, highly faceted and boldly colored sculpture. Michael's current body of work, the "Persanimal" series incorporates images of animals and utilitarian objects brought together to create an abstracted figurative object.
Tip Toland will present several large scale, life like sculpture that create a world of wonder - a larger than life Violinist based on the appearance of Diego Rivera and an androgynous girl, Gracie, resplendent in her bathing suit and large red lips.
Wanxin Zhang, was born in China and after visiting the Terra Cotta Warriors in Xian, China started his lifelong vision of creating small, midsize and large sculptures that incorporate modern cultural elements in concomitance with terra cotta warrior elements.
Margaret Keelan, has developed a new body of work that incorporates two of her interests - folk art and eighteenth and nineteenth century dolls in a faux wood finish.
Ronna Neuenschwander will present several sculptures that utilize found objects and ceramic elements. The sculptures explore the dichotomy between the abundance of the West versus the sparse resources available to her adopted home away from home, Mali, Africa.
Tyler Lotz will exhibit highly colored and layered abstract sculptures that are reminiscent of organic form. Are these pieces inspired from garden forms that have mutated over the centuries?
Bean Finneran will exhibit her non-static sculpture of colored sticks that are built up to remind us about the glory of the ocean. The sculptures remind us of the many wondrous forms of underwater anemone.
Christina West will present three figurative sculptures that explore the emotional, psychological and spiritual aspects of her models.
Joey Chiarello presents a series of highly decorated, attitude ridden and intensely decorated birds and animals. A group of "owls" peer at us inquisitively, a cherubic red and black rhino sits regally while a highly decorated cat observes its domain.
Carol Gouthro creates garden inspired fantasy pieces that are richly glazed with a magnificent balance of color, form and texture.
Ruth Borgenicht wall mount and pedestal sculpture are harbingers of the past - linking concentric circles she creates wall pieces that seem like portions of medieval armor while her pedestal sculpture uses the linking process to create utilitarian objects.
Also Featuring~
The contemporary jewelry exhibit, titled 4 + 1, will feature new works from renowned jewelry artist, Micki Lippe and her four protégés - Jennifer Bennett, Julia Henscheid, Frederick Park and Midori Saito. The exhibit reflects upon the natural bond between teacher and apprentice; a bond that begins as education and ends with reciprocated growth and an expanded vision of what can be.
Each of Ms. Lippe's students demonstrates a honed ability, and a clear artistic voice. Ms. Lippe writes, 'The five of us work in very different materials and directions, which makes for a very interesting visual diversity. The materials…serve as a road map to the paths each of us has taken to our own vision.'
Using elements as varied as natural husk, mica, cast resin and paper, each artist explores their passion for creating works that captivate the imagination while paying homage to the artistry of jewelry making.
Please join us for the First Thursday Art Walk Opening on Thursday, February 5th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
