Catharine Newell - As Is
October 2 - November 1, 2008
Pacini Lubel is proud to exhibit the glass sculpture of artist Catharine Newell in the East Gallery from October 2 through November 1, 2008. Catharine Newell's current sculpture represents a creative, technical, and intellectual development that has evolved since she was a student at the University of California at Santa Barbara. Catharine's initial interest in art centered around drawing and painting but evolved to utilize glass as her primary medium after taking some courses at Pilchuck in 2000. Catharine's interest in painting is intimately integrated into her sculpture as she develops both wall mounted and pedestal pieces. A human face, a human form, or perhaps a reference to nature will take center stage on her slumped glass sculpture utilizing frit instead of paint. Catharine explains that it "boils down to sifting powder onto sheet glass, manipulating these materials to create texture or imagery, and then firing this new work using a schedule that will affect the desired outcome".
Lloyd Herman, founder of the Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. wrote that "Newell discovered that by multiple fusings, adding new color or detail with each firing, she could develop images with nuances of light and shadow that had captivated her as a painter, but were difficult at best to achieve in glass. Painting with frit also permitted a degree of spontaneity that" allowed Catharine to capture feeling and emotional content not normally achieved by glass artists. Lloyd Herman adds that "Newell demonstrates a painter's distinctive talent to "frame" her subjects in somewhat unconventional ways by her choice of angle and distance from them.
Catharine Newell's sculpture is represented and exhibited in numerous national public and private institutions. Additionally, Catharine has been nominated for the Louis Comfort Tiffany Award and a Corning Museum Award.
Please join us for the opening on Thursday, October 2nd from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
