Debra Fritts - I Thirst
June 5 - June 28, 2008
Pacini Lubel Gallery will exhibit the ceramic sculpture of Debra Fritts from June 5 - 28, 2008 in the East Gallery. "Storyteller Debra talks through the language of terra cotta clay. The stories she tells are personal ones, though variations on universal themes, faith, completeness, connection between the earthbound and the divine, between parents and children, between surface and core. The stories leap to life in the forms of her sculpted figures. The building of them, she states, is a slow process requiring both inspiration and often extended contemplation. The sculptures are inquisitive, honest and deep. They dwell on the mysteries and joys of daily living"
Debra Fritts' ceramic pieces are hand built, using thick coils and then multi-fired. A sculpture may be fired three to seven times depending upon the color and the surface treatment. "I approach the color on the clay as a painter" says Fritts. "My palette is a combination of stains, glazes, oxides and under-glazes." When carving the clay, Debra leaves a textured surface - she scratches the surface and imprints it with found objects.
Debra Fritts has had several museum exhibitions and is included in the permanent collection of numerous museums including the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City. She teaches nationally and currently resides in Georgia.
