Jim Kraft and Alicia Tormey
February 7 - March 1, 2008
Pacini Lubel will present the sculptures of Jim Kraft and the encaustic paintings of Alicia Tormey from February 7th through March 1st 2008 in the East Gallery. Both Jim and Alicia utilize the energy of nature as the guiding force of their work.
Jim Kraft's ceramic sculptures center around the vessel. Jim writes "the vessel is probably the purest sculptural form. The vessel form and its making serve as a metaphor on several levels…the material is the stuff of the earth, of warm colors and geological texture; the form itself is sensual, womb-like, consisting of an inside and outside, with the rim representing the dimension where inside and outside meet, where one becomes the other."
Alicia Tormey's paintings are layered with beeswax. Resin and colored pigments are added to the beeswax to create a magical landscape amidst a field of natural elements. Alicia writes that " the inspiration for my botanical pieces came to me when a meadow near my family home in Idaho was cleared for development. I chose to preserve my memories of this area in a series of paintings titled fields of vision. My intent is to capture the more intimate nuances of being in nature and to foster a deeper respect for the environment."
The West Gallery will highlight the paintings of Ronald L. Hall who creates a series of socially important paintings relating to the political and social challenges faced by African Americans. Racial stereotypes, social injustice, as well as references to slavery are explored in this exhibition.
Please join us on February 7th for the First Thursday Opening Reception from 6 to 8 PM.
