Pacini Lubel will celebrate African American History month by celebrating the rich diversity of African American Artists. The gallery will exhibit the work of nationally recognized artists Joyce Scott and Beverly McIver as well as the paintings by local artist, Ron Hall. The exhibition will run from February 1st through February 24th.

Joyce Scott's work depicts the difficulties and challenges of African American's in the United States - she may depict lynching, race riots, domestic violence, hate crimes ....... Ms. Scott's art utilizes weaving, quilting, beadwork, ceramic and the use of glass.

Ms. Scott is nationally recognized and has been exhibited in major national and internation venues. She currently has a retrospective that is touring the country and will eventually be shown in ten musems throughout the United States - this exhibition was recently on view at the Glass Museum in Tacoma and will open in Houston, Texas in early February.

Beverly McIver creates paintings that embody her life experiences - Beverly McIver's paintings are inexorably linked to the racial discrimination she and her family experienced. Her paintings are often self portraits that evoke emotional response. She may be painted with a clown like face - representing her wish to block out her true "colors" or perhaps with an expression of defiance - daring the viewer to denigrate her as she might have been as a child. Her paintings are strong and allow the viewer a glimpse into her experience.

Beverly McIver has had numerous Museum exhibitions and has won prestigious award like the Guggenheim Fellow and the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award (as has Joyce Scott).

Ron Hall is local painter that has generated great interest in his work - he has just concluded a major exhibition in Alaska and at a local University. Ron Hall's paintings reference historical elements and figures pertinent to the African American experience in America. References may include idyllic landscapes layered with images of figures ranging from abolitionists to American President's to contemporary rappers. The richness of Mr. Hall's paintings are derived from the serenity of the underlying imagery tempered with the more superficial figures - the violence and checkered history that African American's have experience in the United States are clearly refernced.

Pacini Lubel will donate 25% of all gallery proceeds from this exhibition to local African American organizations. Please join us during the month of February to celebrate these important African American artists and help us recognize Black History Month.
