Debra Fritts -
September 7th - September 30th. 2006
Pacini Lubel will present the work of ceramist Debra Fritts in the East Gallery from September 7th through September 30th. Debra Fritts is a storyteller - her narrative self portraits are a spontaneous and immediate response to her daily experiences.
"A sense of life's simple celebrations, whether a daydream, a perfect moment or a personal conflict is conveyed through the clay figure," notes Debra. Symbols, such a cardinals are repeated throughout her work. Her mother, orphaned as a child sought solace through the cardinal. On one hand it was her mother's protector and symbolized her parent's watching over her, and on the other hand the cardinal represented one's ability to soar. Hand and foot placement are carefully constructed to evoke feeling, highly textured surfaces represent the protective shell we develop to insulate ourselves from outside forces and facial expression hints to the emotional foundation Debra wishes to create for each sculpture.
Each sculpture is hand built, mainly using thick coils, then multiple firings occur. Each piece is fired up to 7 times depending on the surface treatment - texture and color. Debra views the ceramic form as a painter would view a blank canvas. Debra uses a combination of glazes, stains, slips, oxides, dry clays, under glazes, and mixed media to create the intended surface treatment.
Debra Fritts will be in the gallery during First Thursday from 6pm to 8pm. Please join us.
