The Vessel
June 1 - July 1. 2006
The Vessel, Two Artists, Two Visions will open at Pacini Lubel Gallery on June 1, 2006 and run through July 1, 2006. This show will highlight the work of local artists Carol Gouthro and Bay area artist Nancy Selvin.
Nancy Selvin has a masters in ceramics from the University of California at Berkely and is the recipient of two National endowment for the Arts fellowships. Nancy Selvin's hand built clay vessels create a series of questions for the viewer. Is she strictly a minimalist by design or are her vessels a metaphor for the surroundings - perhaps political, social and environmental concerns run through these sculptures. Are her vessels inspired from the earth. Is her choice of glazing simply a decorative tool or is it intrinsic to the quality of form and function?
Nancy Selvin has her work in the permanent collections of multiple public institutions like the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Smithsonian, Renwick, and the Mint Museum to highlight a few.
In contrast to Nancy Selvin's sparse and rustic approach to the vessel, Carol Gouthro ornaments, layers, colors and boldly clarifies each vessel form she creates. Carol incorporates slab built and cast parts using lusters; when fired at low temperatures these lusters create an iridescent sheen.
Carole's work connects to the environment as well. An avid gardener Carol brings a myriad of natural shapes, forms, and organic elements to her work. Incorporated into her sculpture one may find a bird resting on a prominent stamen of a flower which develops out of brightly colored and richly textured "fantasy orbs". Is this real or simply the consolidation of a number of rich natural elements into one beautifully constructed vessel.
Carol Gouthro has been featured in local and national publications including American Craft, American Ceramics, and Ceramics Monthly, numerous books and is represented in many public collections.
