March 2nd Through April 1st, 2006

Pacini Lubel will present the ceramic sculpture of Justin Novak in the East gallery from March 2 through April 1, 2006. Justin is a professor at the University of Oregon, Eugene and has exhibited his art nationally, most recently at the Nancy Margolis Gallery in New York.

Justin Novak began his exploration of the "Disfigurine" in 1996 and he continues to create sculpture that has a historical foundation of 18th century Sevres and Meissen. "Although sans 18th Century costume and other period specific props, they carry forward the lyrical gestures, flowing surfaces and sense of consummate grace associated with late Baroque and Rococo periods" *. Whereas the figurine was created as a social and decorative statement, Novak's Disfigurine's represents a journey into the psychological realms of relationship - most assuredly exploring the inner details of introspection and personal contact with one's surroundings.

Sharon Campbell of the Pacini Lubel gallery has curated an exhibition titled "Interpretations: Jewelry by the Unexpected Artist" to be exhibited in the West gallery from March 2 through April 1, 2006. Sharon feels that most people perceive jewelry as a "precious" item made of expensive materials and set with lavish stones and that perception needs to be altered. It was her attempt to shake-up that belief by asking artists from other mediums to create a piece of jewelry. Once again visiting the question: is it jewelry if it can't be worn? 25 national artists took the challenge and the work runs the gamut from woven to steel to glass to ceramic.
